I failed to submit weekly claims for two weeks, not realizing that we are required to submit claims on a weekly basis, is a way, I can be compensated for the two weeks in question as again, I was unaware of the requirements of weekly claims and only weekly job searches

Q) I am new to filing unemployment, having been laid off on 12/08/2023, and was not explained completely on the process. Having said such, I have already had to appeal a decision that was made, docket number #, for not answering a question correctly about accept employment outside of my house. I explained to Sarah, who was very nice and understanding, and accepted that I simply answered the question incorrectly. My other incident now is that I failed to submit weekly claims for two weeks, not realizing that we are required to submit claims on a weekly basis, but the weeks in question I did submit my weekly job searches proving that I have remained out of work and just did not file my weekly claims and now I am being penalized by not receiving my much needed funds which I have worked hard for. Please let me know if there is a way, I can be compensated for the two weeks in question as again, I was unaware of the requirements of weekly claims and only weekly job searches.

A) I understand your situation and the challenges you’re facing with your unemployment claims. Unfortunately, I can’t provide specific legal advice, but I can offer some general information and resources that may be helpful.

Regarding your missed weekly claims:

  • Each state has different policies for handling missed claims. Whether you can be compensated for the two weeks you missed depends on the specific rules and regulations of your state unemployment insurance program.
  • Contact your state Department of Labor (DOL). Explain your situation to them and ask about the possibility of recovering benefits for the missed weeks. They can guide you through the process and inform you of the specific reasons why your claim might be denied or approved.
  • Appeal the decision, if necessary: If the DOL denies your request for compensation for the missed weeks, you have the right to appeal the decision. The DOL website should have information on how to do this.
  • File your weekly claims on time from now on: This will help avoid any future issues with receiving your benefits.

I hope this information is helpful. Please remember that I am not a lawyer and cannot provide legal advice. If you have further questions or need legal assistance, it is best to consult with an attorney who specializes in unemployment law.
