received a correspondence saying I did not validate my identity. Do I have to go to the unemployment office in person

Q) I filed on line last week. I am a NY resident who worked in NJ. I received a correspondence saying I did not validate my identity (I included my SS#) but do not have any NJ id number. Do I have to go to the unemployment office in person, or can this be handled over the phone?

A) You can try to resolve the issue over the phone first. You can call the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development at 1-800-642-4841. When you call, be sure to have your Social Security number and your claim number ready.

If you are unable to resolve the issue over the phone, you may need to go to the unemployment office in person. You can find the address of the unemployment office in your area by visiting the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development website.

When you go to the unemployment office, be sure to bring your Social Security card, your driver’s license or other form of identification, and any other documentation that you have that proves your identity.

You may also want to bring a copy of your claim form and any correspondence that you have received from the unemployment office.

The unemployment office staff will be able to help you verify your identity and resolve the issue.
