Filing unemployment claims for the past 9 weeks, but each week declined.
Q) I have received a letter confirming my eligibility for Unemployment Insurance, and have been filing weekly claims for the past 9 Wednesdays, but each week has been declined. I am not sure why. I filled out the direct deposit information, and I have been actively seeking work each week.
A) I understand your frustration. It can be very confusing and frustrating when you are eligible for unemployment benefits but are not receiving them. There are a few things you can do to try to figure out why your claims are being declined.
First, you should contact your state’s unemployment office. They will be able to tell you why your claims are being declined and what you need to do to get them approved. You can find the contact information for your state’s unemployment office on the U.S. Department of Labor website.
Second, you should review your weekly claims to make sure that you are filling them out correctly. There are a few things that can cause your claims to be declined, such as:
- Not providing enough information about your job search efforts
- Not answering all of the questions on the claim form
- Filing your claim late
If you are sure that you are filling out your claims correctly, you may need to appeal the decision to deny your benefits. You can do this by contacting your state’s unemployment office and requesting an appeal hearing. An appeal hearing is a chance for you to present your case to an unemployment judge. If the judge finds in your favor, you will be awarded benefits for the weeks that you were denied.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
I would also suggest that you call or preferably visit your local unemployment office and speak with a counselor regarding why you are not receiving your eligible unemployment benefits. It may be that you are not fully following their guidelines regarding how to certify each week. For some unemployment offices you have to fill out a report on companies for which you have applied for a job each week.
