I am relocating to the Sonora area. I am a senoir with skills in both property management, business developement and upholstery. Also anything boat oriented. Marine services. I am relocating to be closer to family as I am completly isolated and stuck on the Oregon Coast. Please offer me options to become employed in the foothills. I am 63 and my family in Sonora has asked that I move closer so I am not alone and isolated as I grow older.
️ Property Management & Business Development
This is the area where the job search results showed the most direct and immediate openings. Your management and business development experience is highly valued.
Property Manager / Assistant Community Manager: Sonora and the surrounding towns like Jamestown and Groveland have various property management companies (e.g., Mother Lode Property Management, Frontier Property Management, Countryside Property Management) that handle residential, commercial, and sometimes vacation rentals.
Action Step: Look for roles like “On-Site Property Manager,” “Assistant Community Manager,” or “Records Manager” (like the position with the County of Tuolumne mentioned in the search) where your organizational and management skills would be a perfect fit. Many postings are for full-time, but part-time or seasonal work might be an option.
Business Consultant / Development: Sonora is a smaller market where your business development expertise could be invaluable to local small businesses or non-profits looking to grow or streamline operations.
Action Step: Consider freelance consulting or approaching organizations like the Sonora Chamber of Commerce or Mother Lode Economic Development Authority to see if they have programs that connect experienced professionals with local businesses for short-term projects or mentorship.
Real Estate Support: Your property management background is an asset to a real estate office. They might hire you for a Transaction Coordinator or Office Manager role, leveraging your administrative and property knowledge without requiring you to get a real estate license right away.
️ Marine Services (Boat-Oriented)
Given your experience on the Oregon Coast, this is a unique and valuable niche for the Sonora area, as Tuolumne County is home to several popular recreational lakes (e.g., Don Pedro, New Melones, Lake Tulloch).
Marinas and Boat Storage Facilities:
Action Step: Look into employment at local marinas like Don Pedro Lake Marina or services near New Melones Lake. They often need people for boat maintenance coordination, customer service, business office management, or facility management, especially in the lead-up to and during the busy spring/summer season. Your business background could be ideal for managing a marina’s operations.
Service and Repair Shops:
Action Step: Search for local boat repair or marine services shops. Even if you aren’t doing the mechanics, your experience in customer service, parts ordering, or even basic administrative/business management could be exactly what a small, busy shop needs.
Upholstery (Craft/Skilled Trade)
While a niche skill, this can be an excellent source of flexible income through small business or contract work.
Small Business/Self-Employment:
Action Step: Given the potential for boat-related work (marine upholstery is a high-demand service) and a community with older homes/furniture, you could start a small, home-based upholstery business. You could focus on boat cushions/covers, antique furniture, or auto upholstery (e.g., classic cars). This gives you total control over your schedule.
Contract Work with Local Shops:
Action Step: Contact local interior design studios, furniture stores, or antique shops in Sonora and nearby towns like Columbia or Murphys. They may outsource their repair or custom work, allowing you to work as an independent contractor or on a part-time basis.
Community & Part-Time/Senior-Focused Options
There are also jobs that value maturity, experience, and reliability, which are great options for supplementing income and becoming involved in the community.
Senior Services: Organizations like Sierra Senior Providers, Inc. offer essential services to the elderly and often need staff or dedicated volunteers. You could look for positions like a Social Work Care Manager (which was listed in the search results) or administrative support roles.
County and Government: The County of Tuolumne frequently hires for positions like Assessment Recording Tech I/II/Senior or various administrative roles which value experienced candidates. You can check their official job board.
Home/Personal Services: Opportunities like Home Care Aide or dependable house cleaner/organizer (as seen in the search results) offer flexible, part-time work where you can use your reliability and organizational skills.
This move to be closer to your family sounds very positive, and your broad skill set gives you many avenues to explore!
