This is my first time applying for unemployment benefits and I am confused on why I am not able to submit a claim for the week when I was originally told to come back by the 9th to apply for benefits now it is stating i need to be back in by the 14th? Not sure if I am doing this correctly. I have tried calling to talk to someone but i have had no luck in getting in contact with anyone. Suggestions on the next move to make sure i am receiving benefits?

It sounds like you’re encountering some confusion with your unemployment benefits application. Here’s a breakdown of how to proceed and what to do:
- Clarify the Return-to-Work Date:
- Double-check your separation notice: This document should clearly state your last day of employment and any instructions regarding unemployment benefits.
- Review your employer’s communication: If you received any verbal instructions, try to confirm them in writing or through email.
- Understand the Filing Deadline:
- State-Specific Rules: The deadline for filing an initial unemployment claim varies by state.
- Research your state’s regulations: Visit your state’s unemployment agency website or contact them directly to confirm the correct filing deadline.
- Address the Filing Issue:
- Online Application: If possible, file your claim online through your state’s unemployment agency website. This is often the quickest and most efficient method.
- Phone Assistance: If you’re unable to file online, continue trying to reach the unemployment agency by phone.
- Consider alternative contact methods: Some agencies may offer live chat support or email inquiries.
- Gather Necessary Information:
- Social Security Number: You’ll need this for identification purposes.
- Employment Information: Have your previous employer’s name, address, and contact information ready.
- Wage Information: Be prepared to provide details about your earnings from your previous employment.
- Document Everything:
- Keep records of all communication: Note the date and time of any phone calls, emails, or online chats with the unemployment agency.
- Save copies of all documents: This includes your separation notice, any correspondence with your employer, and any confirmation messages from the unemployment agency.
Important Notes:
- Be patient: The unemployment system can be busy, especially during periods of high unemployment. 1 1. Online Unemployment Benefits Systems Are Buckling Under a Wave of Applications themarkup.org
- Don’t give up: Continue to try to contact the unemployment agency and persist in resolving the issue.
- Seek assistance: If you’re having difficulty navigating the unemployment system, consider reaching out to a local unemployment assistance organization or a legal aid society for guidance.
