Can I apply for an Unemployment Benefit extension? How do I do that?

Q) I recently applied for unemployment and have been receiving a weekly benefit amount as long as I submit 2 places I applied for a job position. I do everything online, this week would not allow me to put my 2 locations in. Is it possible I have exhausted my benefits due me? If so can I apply for an extension? If so how do I do that?

A) It’s possible that your state’s unemployment program has run out of funds or that you have exhausted your unemployment benefits. You should check with your state’s unemployment office to see if you are eligible for an extension. Each state has different rules and procedures for filing for an extension, so you should visit your state’s unemployment website or contact them by phone to get more information on how to proceed. They will be able to answer your questions and guide you through the process of applying for an extension, if you are eligible.

You may have exhausted your benefits. You need to call your unemployment office to verify.  In some states you can apply for an extension of your unemployment insurance benefits online. Some states will send you a letter informing you that your benefits have been exhausted and an extension is available. However as you certify going forward your benefits will be reduced to a new rate during the extension period. If you have not received an extension notification letter, you will need to report to your local unemployment office and apply for your extension if it is available.
